She spots him from across the room, leaning lightly on a cane as he sips on the deplorable champagne provided by the wait staff. He’s the only one not donning a mask…how fitting. She supposes when you’re the richest man in the room; you don’t exactly have to play by the rules, even if it’s as simple as a masquerade party. As Wayne moves to chatter with other guests, she moves from her perch near the exit, moving purposefully through the dancers until her fingers rap lightly against his suit coat to get his attention.

“Let’s dance, Mr. Wayne.”

Her voice is like silk, but he knows that tone; knows the clever escapist behind it. He turns slowly. Selina’s full red lips upturned in a smile, the black lace covering her face as tiny ears set up from within her hair. A string of pearls rest lightly on her collarbones, and her black dress conforms to her flattering figure as it flows to the floor. Silently he wonders where she’s hiding the tools of her craft under all of that fabric.

“I don’t feel like dancing, Miss Kyle.”

“Good thing I wasn’t asking,” she retorts.

He sighs in defeat, not in the mood for arguing as he passes off his cane and glass to the nearest waiter for safekeeping. Offering her his hand, her fingers slip gently into his as they walk to the dance floor, find an empty space, and fall into form.

“That’s a brazen costume, for a cat burglar.”

Her brow furrows in disapproval, tired of his pompous attitude already.

“Yeah…who are you pretending to be?”

He laughs it off, hoping that the song will end early and they can get this over with sooner rather than later. Her eyes burn into him, analyzing every emotion from behind her mask.

“You think this can last…”

His lips open to ask her what she’s referring to, but she continues on anyway, leaning in closer.

“There’s a storm coming, Mr. Wayne. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you’re all going to wonder how you thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.”

Her silken voice turns to razors as she hisses the last few words against his ear. His spine straightens slightly, but he manages to hold his composure while she’s near and reading his every reaction. The song comes to a close and he pulls away from her clutches gently, placing a hand on her shoulder as he responds with an even tone.

“You sound like you’re looking forward to it.”

Before she walks away, Selina returns to her normal self, a sly smiling of knowing something that you don’t hanging from her lips.

“Of course, I’m adaptable.”
